Recycling Junk Car Antifreeze

As an environmentally conscious auto scrapper and buyer of cars for cash, Cash 4 Cars Akron wishes to provide the necessary information involved in recycling antifreeze from junk cars. Most sellers of old vehicles are primarily concerned with the price for a junk car or price for scrap cars.  In order to protect the environment, including the safety of the water we all drink, fluids from these cars must be disposed of properly. The US Environmental Protection Agency has a solid overview of this process available at epa.gov and we have put together the following summary from this resource.

“Antifreeze is a substance added to a solvent, such as water, to lower its freezing point. Antifreeze is typically added to water in the cooling system of an engine so that it can be cooled below the freezing point of water (32 degrees F) without freezing. Ethylene glycol is the most widely used automotive cooling-system antifreeze, although methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, and propylene glycol are also used. Antifreeze is toxic to humans & animals. Waste antifreeze contains heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and chromium in high levels to make it a regulated hazardous waste, so most states regulate antifreeze disposal. Antifreeze generators should not dump spent antifreeze on land or discharge it into a sewer, storm drain, ditch, well, or septic system; dumping antifreeze can cause serious water quality problems and might harm people, pets, or wildlife. Conventional antifreeze lasts 2-3 years. Different chemicals in extended-life coolants allow it to last 5 years or 150,000 miles. Heavy-duty, extended-life antifreeze lasts between 400,000 and 600,000 miles with the use of a one-time extender. Recycling used antifreeze makes sense. It is cost-effective and saves resources. Ethylene glycol, the primary ingredient, is produced from natural gas, a finite, non-renewable resource. For businesses that use a lot of antifreeze, like auto repair shops, setting up an antifreeze recycling program can significantly reduce costs & lessen the amount of new materials purchased. Using technology, businesses are recycling antifreeze on site & reconditioning it with additives at a cost that is significantly lower than the cost of purchasing new. Antifreeze recycling involves removing contaminants such as emulsified oils & heavy metals either by filtration, distillation, reverse osmosis, or ion exchange and restoring critical antifreeze properties with additives.” The complete report is available at www.epa.gov
