Junk car owners to be fined

The city of Lorain is no longer tolerating junk cars and scrap vehicles littering the city. A totaled car or old junk vehicle is certainly not an addition to the curb appeal of any neighborhood. These cars need to be scheduled for vehicle removal, as they are essentially vehicle scrap. Many options are available including: to sell a car for cash, to donate it, or other means of vehicle removal.

An article by Richard Payerchin of the Morning Journal titled ‘Lorain residents must get rid of junk cars or face fines, city says’ reported the following: “Lorain residents who have junk cars in their yards need to get rid of them or face citations and fines” said Leon Mason, the city’s director of BHP. Lorain inspectors will issue citations to property owners or tenants who violate the city’s rules prohibiting disabled cars and trucks & regulating the storage of recreational vehicles. Numerous disabled vehicles throughout our city, and often times these vehicles serve as shelters for vermin, degrade the character of a neighborhood & cause an unsightly appearance to streets & lawns. Mason gave the example of 70 disabled cars or trucks in a 5-block radius from W. 18th Street to W. 23rd St.

A vehicle in Lorain is considered disabled if it meets at least 2 of 4 conditions:

1. Extensively damaged or wrecked.
2. Apparently inoperable.
3. It is not in good/safe operating condition, or no longer safely usable.
4. Not street legal due to expired license plates

The penalty for citations is $25 a day, and court costs at about $110.  Mason suggested people get rid of disabled cars & trucks by donating them to organizations such as the Salvation Army, Our Lady of the Wayside & the Purple Heart. The 3 charitable organizations may take cars or trucks, whether running or not, at no cost, and donors may earn potential tax deductions for the donations. I’m trying to give people the opportunity to abate the nuisance condition by getting rid of the cars and trucks.

Lorain residents also could opt to sell the disabled cars for components or scrap. Residents who do that should research any potential buyer to ensure they are a reputable person. As for RV’s, campers & boats, they must be stored in a rear yard behind an occupied or enclosed structure. Owners of any RVs, campers or boats stored elsewhere for more than 48 hours may be cited. The citations are a summons to appear in Lorain Municipal Court, and residents who choose to ignore the city tickets may face warrants through the court. We avoid any of this by people complying with the codified (ordinances). We don’t need any more trees growing through cars. Disabled cars are a nuisance that needs to be eliminated in Lorain.” The complete article is available on their website:   http://www.morningjournal.com/
